Historical Note
The Secular Games altar with flanking figures commemorates the Ludi Saeculares of 17 BC, Augustus's great ceremony marking the beginning of a new golden age. The togate, veiled figure likely represents Augustus himself performing the sacral duties; the herald with caduceus announces the sacred games. The enclosing oak-wreath alludes to the civic crown (corona civica) — one of Augustus's permanent honours.
