RIC I² 28

Obverse

Head of Augustus, bare, right

Reverse

Domed Temple with four columns. Inside, Mars, helmeted, standing left, right holding aquila, left standard over left shoulder

Historical Note

The Temple of Mars Ultor, dedicated 2 BC, depicted with Mars holding the aquila and military standard. The temple served multiple roles in Augustan ideology: honouring Caesar's avenger, housing the recovered Parthian standards, and providing the venue for official departures of military commanders. This tetrastyle variant is one of several temple depictions on Augustan coinage.
