Historical Note
Two laurel branches flanking an oak-wreath inscribed OCS (Ob Cives Servatos — 'for having saved the citizens') encapsulates the core Augustan political settlement of 27 BC. The civic crown and laurels were placed at his door by the Senate as permanent monuments to his role in ending the civil wars. This became one of the most recognisable motifs of his coinage.
