RIC I² 302

Obverse

Triskelis with winged Medusa head and legs

Reverse

Two laurel branches flanking oak-wreath; inside, OCS

Historical Note

The oak-wreath flanked by laurel branches with OCS (= Ob Cives Servatos, 'for having saved the citizens') is one of the most emblematic Augustan coin compositions. The civic crown was awarded to Augustus in 27 BC for ending the civil wars and saving Roman lives — an unprecedented honour for a living person. The flanking laurels represent the laurel trees placed at his door on the same occasion.
