RIC I² 369

Obverse

Bust of Victory, winged, draped, right

Reverse

Veiled priest standing left, holding patera over altar right; victimarius leads bull to same altar with knife

Historical Note

The sacrificial scene — a veiled priest with patera (libation bowl) and a victimarius (sacrificial attendant) leading a bull — represents one of the major public sacrifices of Augustus's reign, possibly associated with the Secular Games of 17 BC or the vows taken at the beginning of the principate. The patera and bull together mark this as a major public sacrifice, not a private rite.
