Sphinx seated left

Historical Note

The sphinx was Augustus's personal seal — used on his signet ring before he switched to a portrait ring. It drew on Egyptian associations (following the conquest of 30 BC) and on the sphinx's traditional guardianship role. The leftward-facing orientation is the less common of the two sphinx types.
