Historical Note

The sphinx was Augustus's personal seal — used on his signet ring before he switched to a portrait ring. It combined Egyptian associations (timely after the conquest of 30 BC) with the sphinx's traditional role as a guardian. The rightward-facing variant is the more common orientation. Augustus's use of a sphinx seal was noted by ancient sources as characteristic of his early career.
