Historical Note

Victory stands with spread wings holding the Clipeus Virtutis — the golden shield of virtue awarded to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC, inscribed with virtus, clementia, iustitia, and pietas. The frontal pose of Victory with spread wings is a striking compositional choice, giving the figure monumental presence and emphasising the importance of the honour she holds.
