Obverse

Head of Augustus, bare, right

Reverse

Laurel wreath

Historical Note

The laurel wreath was the crown of military triumph and later of imperial office. Augustus held the permanent right to wear it — one of several honours voted to him in 27 BC. The unadorned laurel wreath as a reverse type creates one of the simplest and most direct Augustan coin compositions, presenting the crown of victory without additional imagery.
