Obverse

Head of Augustus, bare, right, in oak-wreath

Reverse

Augustus, laureate, left, and Agrippa, with combined mural and rostral crown, right, both togate and holding roll; capsa at feet

Historical Note

This facing portrait type of Augustus and Agrippa, the only men it depicts as true co-rulers, is one of the most striking of the Augustan period. Both are shown togate (civilian dress), holding a scroll (document of authority), with a capsa (scroll-box) at their feet. It reflects the period c. 18–13 BC when Agrippa held tribunician power alongside Augustus — the closest Rome came to a formal dyarchy. Agrippa died in 12 BC before Augustus.
