Historical Note

Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was Augustus's greatest general and closest colleague — the architect of the naval victories at Naulochus (36 BC) and Actium (31 BC), without which Augustus would not have won sole power. He was awarded the unique combined mural and rostral crown — no other Roman held both simultaneously. He married Augustus's daughter Julia in 21 BC; their sons Gaius and Lucius became Augustus's heirs. Agrippa also built the Pantheon, the Baths of Agrippa, and the first Roman world map. He died in 12 BC.
