Obverse

Head of Augustus, oak-wreathed, right

Reverse

Agrippa head right, with combined mural and rostral crown

Historical Note

This portrait of Agrippa with his combined mural and rostral crown is one of the most important secondary portraits of the Augustan period. Agrippa's unique double crown acknowledged that he had won both a naval and a land siege — won both crowns legitimately, not by gift. His death in 12 BC and the subsequent deaths of his sons Gaius and Lucius were the defining tragedies of Augustus's reign.
