CL V inscribed on shield

Historical Note

CL V = Clipeus Virtutis — the golden shield of virtue awarded to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC, inscribed with the four Augustan virtues: virtus (courage), clementia (mercy), iustitia (justice), and pietas (duty to gods, family, and state). The shield was displayed in the Senate house (Curia Iulia) and became one of the central symbols of the Augustan settlement alongside the civic crown, the laurel, and the title Augustus itself.
