RIC I² 520

Obverse

Head of Augustus, bare, right

Reverse

Armenian standing, facing, holding spear in right hand and resting bow-case on ground with left

Historical Note

Coins depicting an Armenian figure in traditional dress mark the settlement of Armenia in 20 BC, when Augustus installed Tigranes as client king. The spear and bow-case are Armenian royal attributes. Unlike the kneeling types, the standing figure implies a more equal relationship — a client king rather than a vanquished enemy.
