Round shield inscribed CL V, with S P Q R in corners between aquila, left, and standard, right
Historical Note
The Clipeus Virtutis (CL V) was the golden shield awarded to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC, inscribed with his four virtues: virtus, clementia, iustitia, and pietas. Flanked by an aquila and military standard, and bearing SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus), this composition combines the personal honour with military authority — presenting Augustus simultaneously as the Senate's champion and Rome's commander.
