Obverse

Head of Augustus, laureate, right

Reverse

Tiberius, laureate, standing right in quadriga, holding laurel branch in right and sceptre in left; horses face right

Historical Note

Tiberius in a triumphal quadriga — the standard depiction of a Roman general celebrating a triumph. This type celebrates one of Tiberius's Balkan or German victories, likely the Pannonian-Dalmatian triumph of AD 12 or the earlier campaigns. Tiberius is shown with laurel branch (triumph) and sceptre (command authority). The rightward-facing horses distinguish this variant from the leftward-facing type.
