Everything you need to know about using Monetarium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Monetarium?+
Monetarium is a comprehensive catalogue and toolkit for collectors of ancient Roman coins. It covers over 40,000 coin types from the Roman Imperial and Republican periods, with images, descriptions, reference numbers, and sold-price history from major auction houses.
Is Monetarium free to use?+
Yes. Browsing the catalogue, viewing coin details, identifying coins, and using reference pages are all free. Viewing full sold-price history has a monthly limit on the free tier. Paid plans (Collector and Pro) unlock higher limits and additional features like listing alerts and portfolio analytics.
Where does the coin data come from?+
The catalogue is built from the Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE) database, which draws on the standard Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) reference volumes. Republican coins use the Crawford (RRC) numbering system. We supplement this with images from museum collections and community submissions.
How are sold prices calculated?+
Prices come from real auction results at major houses including CNG and various Biddr-hosted auctions. Each price includes the buyer's premium (the fee the auction house charges on top of the hammer price). The estimated value shown on coin pages is the median of all recorded sales, excluding statistical outliers.
What do the reference numbers mean?+
RIC numbers (e.g. RIC IV 96) refer to the Roman Imperial Coinage catalogue, the standard reference for imperial coins. RRC or Crawford numbers (e.g. RRC 44/5) refer to Michael Crawford's Roman Republican Coinage. RSC numbers refer to the older Seaby catalogue of Roman Silver Coins. You can browse all reference numbers on the Catalogue Numbers page.
Can I track my own collection?+
Yes. Sign in and use the Collection feature to add coins you own, record purchase details (price, grade, date, dealer), and upload photos. Your collection page shows your total estimated value based on current market data.
How does the coin identification tool work?+
The Identify tool lets you describe physical traits of a coin you are trying to identify, such as the emperor's portrait type, denomination, metal, and any visible legend text. It searches the catalogue using fuzzy matching, so partial or worn legends still return results.
What currencies are supported?+
All prices can be viewed in GBP, EUR, USD, or CHF. Use the currency toggle in the navigation bar to switch. Exchange rates are updated monthly.
