Head of Augustus, bare, right
Reverse
Victory right, cutting throat of recumbent bull held by the horn
Historical Note
Victory sacrificing a bull is a distinctly Roman image of religious thanksgiving following military success. After Actium and the conquest of Egypt, Augustus celebrated multiple triumphs and made extensive sacrifices. This type may specifically reference the sacrifices of 29 BC, when Augustus celebrated his triple triumph and the closure of the Temple of Janus.
