Argenteus
Silver (argentum) · ~3g · ~96% pure
AD 294–320
Diocletian's pure silver coin, introduced around AD 294 as part of his sweeping currency reform. Struck at the weight and fineness of Nero's original denarius (about 3g of 96% silver), the argenteus was an attempt to restore confidence in a silver coinage that had been debased to almost nothing. It was produced for barely two decades before being discontinued, making it short-lived but historically important.
