Triens

Bronze / Brass (aes) · ~3.5g

280–80 BC

One third of an as, marked with four dots (representing 4 unciae). The triens was part of the elaborate Republican bronze system based on the as as unit of weight. In the earliest period these were large, heavy cast discs. After the monetary reform of 211 BC they became small struck coins, gradually fading from production as the system simplified under the Empire.
