Uncia
Bronze / Brass (aes) · ~1g
280–100 BC
The smallest standard Roman bronze denomination, equal to one twelfth of an as. The word 'uncia' gives us 'ounce' in English. Originally a cast bronze piece, it became a tiny struck coin after the denarius reform. Unciae are among the smallest and most easily lost Roman coins, making surviving examples relatively scarce despite being produced in quantity.
