Victoriatus
Silver (argentum) · ~3.4g · ~97% pure
211–170 BC
An early Republican silver coin named for the Victory crowning a trophy on its reverse. Introduced alongside the denarius around 211 BC, the victoriatus was designed to circulate in southern Italy and trade with the Greek world, where its weight matched the Illyrian drachm. It fell out of use within a few decades as the denarius became dominant.
