Rostral column with prows of ships; on top, statue of Octavian
Historical Note
The rostral column surmounted by Octavian's statue commemorates the naval victories of the civil wars — most likely the victory over Sextus Pompey at Naulochus in 36 BC and/or the victory at Actium in 31 BC. Rostral columns (decorated with the prows of captured enemy ships) were Rome's highest naval honours. The version erected for Octavian in the Forum was a mark of extraordinary distinction.
