Historical Note

Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology, appears on some Augustan coin types in connection with the military colonies Augustus established for his veterans after Actium. Pegasus was the symbol of the Legio II Augusta and of several Augustan colonies. Its appearance on coinage may specifically relate to colonial issues or to the victories that made the mass colonisation possible.
