Historical Note

The Secular Games (Ludi Saeculares) of 17 BC were a festival marking the beginning of a new saeculum (age), theoretically held once every 110 years. Augustus revived and elaborated the ceremony as a declaration that a new golden age had begun under his rule. Horace composed the Carmen Saeculare specifically for the event. LVD SAEC = Ludi Saeculares ('Secular Games'). Coins commemorating the games are among the most precisely dateable issues of the reign.
