Triumphal arch Inscribed S P Q R IMP CAE, surmounted by facing quadriga

Historical Note

The triumphal arch inscribed S P Q R IMP CAE (Imperator Caesar) is likely the Actian arch erected in the Roman Forum in 29 BC to commemorate the victory at Actium and the conquest of Egypt. Augustus was awarded multiple triumphal arches — the Actian arch (29 BC) and the Parthian arch (19 BC) are the best documented. The facing quadriga atop the arch presents Augustus as triumphator.
