Reverse
Victory flying right holding shield inscribed CL V, right hand also holding laurel-branch
Historical Note
Victory carries the Clipeus Virtutis (virtue shield, 27 BC) and a laurel branch — combining the Senate's recognition of Augustus's moral character with the military laurels that preceded it. The Clipeus Virtutis was among the most important honours of the Augustan settlement, displayed permanently in the Senate house.
