Round shield inscribed CL V, with S P Q R in corners between aquila, right, and standard, left
Historical Note
The Clipeus Virtutis (CL V) was the golden shield awarded by the Senate in 27 BC, inscribed with the four Augustan virtues. This variant places the aquila on the right and the standard on the left — a die variation within the same iconographic programme. The SPQR in the corners acknowledges senatorial authority while the military symbols frame Augustus as Rome's supreme commander.
