Semis

Bronze / Brass (aes) · ~5g

280 BC – AD 130

Half an as, worth the smallest useful amount in everyday Roman commerce. Originally a cast bronze piece marked with an S or six dots, Imperial semisses were small copper coins rarely struck after the reign of Hadrian. Their low value and small size meant they were easily lost. The denomination gives English the prefix 'semi-' meaning half.
