Sestertius
Bronze / Brass (aes) · ~26g
23 BC – AD 268
The largest standard Roman coin, struck in orichalcum (a golden brass alloy). Quarter the value of a denarius, the sestertius is prized today for its size: the broad flan gave engravers room for the finest portraiture and reverse scenes in the Roman series. Many carry some of the most beautiful coin art ever produced.
