Miliarense

Silver (argentum) · ~4.5g

AD 324–500

A late Roman silver coin introduced by Constantine I, named from the Latin miliarensis, referring to its value of one thousandth of a gold pound. Two varieties existed: the heavy miliarense (about 5.4g) and the light miliarense (about 4.5g). Never produced in large quantities, the miliarense was a prestige issue often given as imperial gifts. Surviving examples are frequently well-preserved, suggesting they were saved rather than circulated.
