Semissis
Gold (aurum) · ~2.25g · ~99% pure
AD 383–1092
Half a solidus in gold, weighing about 2.25g. The semissis was introduced in the late 4th century as a convenient smaller gold denomination for payments that didn't warrant a full solidus. Less common than the solidus itself, semisses are found more frequently in hoards from the eastern empire. They were struck at the same high purity as the solidus.
