Tremissis

Gold (aurum) · ~1.5g · ~99% pure

AD 383–700

One third of a solidus, weighing about 1.5g of near-pure gold. The tremissis became the most common small gold coin of the late Roman and early Byzantine world. After the fall of the Western Empire, Germanic successor kingdoms continued striking tremisses for centuries, making it one of the last Roman denominations still in active production long after Rome itself had fallen.
